Will I need to top-up my hair removal treatments in future?

Why hair removal might need topping up

While it’s true that laser hair removal is the most effective method of removing unwanted hair with long-lasting results, many people will continue with top-up sessions following their main course of treatment.

Isn’t hair removal a permanent process?

Whilst the hair that is removed during your treatment is permanently removed, the fact is that the procedure may not get rid of all unwanted hairs completely. However, it will have an enduring effect as new hair follicles will take a lot longer to grow back than when you shave or wax and most hair will never grow back at all. And when they do, they will be finer, lighter and much easier to manage.

Two things to think about:

  • Results from a single session will be less effective than from a series of sessions.
  • The more experienced your technician is and the more up-to-date the laser machine, the better results you’ll get.

So how does hair removal work?

Your hair follicles are the organs that produce your hair growth and are situated just underneath your skin. During your laser treatment, the laser beams heat up these hair follicles, destroying them and permanently preventing them from producing new hair.

Because your hair follicles generate new hairs in a continuous cycle of growth and shedding, it is necessary to undergo a course of several treatments so that the laser light is applied during the growth stage – which is when the follicles respond to this type of treatment. As at any one moment in time all areas of the skin will contain follicles at various stages of the growth cycle, having a number of treatment sessions will capture as many follicles as possible during this responsive growth stage.

Shaving, waxing and using tweezers only remove hair above the surface without affecting the hair follicles. This is why these procedures always result in regrowth – and, as we all know, tweezed hair can get stimulated and become thicker.

If the hair follicle is damaged, why would I need a top-up?

As a general rule, your laser hair removal treatment takes between 6 and 8 sessions spaced out over a number of months aligned with your hair’s natural growth cycles. By undergoing a series of treatments this way you will achieve the best possible results, assuring your skin will stay as smooth and hair-free as possible.

We know that hair growth is controlled by our hormones. Therefore, top up sessions are needed as some hair follicles may grow back – although they will never be as dark or thick as before.

How often you have a top up depends on such things as your hormones,  genetics, hair type and colour. Usually you will only need a top up once or twice a year, and if you only have a few areas to be touched up, your treatments will be much shorter.

Why do the latest machines make a difference?

As with any machine, updated technology improves efficacy. That’s why we all want to drive the latest model of car with all the latest bells and whistles! As an example, the Soprano ICE Titanium has 3 different types of wavelengths of light and targets different types of hair growths at different stages of the growth cycle, so is even more effective than previous Soprano models. Treatment is also quicker, which is an added bonus for anyone with a busy life.

So, what’s the bottom line?

At the end of the day, laser hair removal is the crème de la crème of hair removal options. Even if you do need the occasional top up, laser treatment gives you the best, longest lasting results of any of the alternatives – guaranteed!
