Cryotherapy post-treatment

Now your surgery has been carried out you’ll want to ensure you get the very best results and, to some extent, that’s up to you!  These are a few suggestions that will make a significant difference to both short and longer-term outcomes.  Please take the time to read and follow the below advice.

Important information

Your Doctor will have explained how to care for the treated area. Avoid getting the treated area wet until a scab has formed.  If the area gets wet pat dry gently with a clean towel or tissue.

Unless your Doctor says otherwise, Vaseline can be applied once the scab has formed. Usually a dressing isn’t needed, but if you find your clothes are rubbing the area or it’s catching on anything it’s fine to cover it with a light sterile dressing or plaster.

DO NOT:

Rub, scratch or pick at the scab or you will prevent it healing properly and may end up with unsightly scars.

What to expect

If you’ve had a deep freeze you may have some pain afterwards.  Painkillers such as paracetamol, can relieve discomfort in the first 24 hours after surgery.

There will usually be some swelling and redness, which is normal.  Your Doctor may apply a steroid ointment to the treated area to reduce this, but it usually settles down after two or three days.  If your treatment has been near your eyes you can experience noticeable puffiness in the lower eyelids, but this will settle down over the next few days.

The treated area may ooze a little to start with and then a scab will form.

Cryotherapy often leaves blisters and everyone is different so some people blister more easily than others.  The blisters normally settle down as the scab forms.  Occasionally blisters can appear to be filled with blood; this is harmless and will disappear as long as you leave them alone.

Very occasionally the area can become infected (that’s why it’s so important to look after it properly).  If you experience pain and see pus-forming contact your GP who may prescribe an antiseptic cream or antiobiotics.

Improve your results

Your body needs a lot of energy to heal quickly so it’s important that you eat well. In particular, you need vitamin C and protein so aim to eat a healthy, balanced diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables.

Make sure that you drink enough water as this will help the treated area to heal quickly.

If you have diabetes take extra care that your blood sugar is well controlled.
