What’s best – IPL or laser hair removal?

When you start looking at hair removal treatments you may get confused about the different options available to you, and how they work. Although electrolysis and topical creams can be used, the usual choice is between IPL and laser hair removal. Both are effective methods and will give you superb, long-lasting results. But which is best?

How do IPL and laser hair removal work?

Laser is an acronym for Light Amplification by Simulated Emission of Radiation. IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light.

Put simply, they both use light to heat up the hair follicles and destroy the hair-producing cells in the targeted area. Like IPL, most lasers use a single flash. The main difference is that they use different types of light.

So how do you decide which is best for you?

Both types of light can be equally effective and will achieve similar results – as long as your technician has the necessary skills and experience using the machine in question. This is the most important consideration when deciding which type of machine to go for.

Which is the most comfortable type of machine?

Some clients say they experience a slight pinch when having an IPL treatment. But a really good technician will ensure that an IPL treatment will still be comfortable.

In recent years, the manufacturers of laser machines have moved ahead with more and more technological advances. The most modern lasers have more features ensuring better efficacy and comfort than ever before, which might influence your decision.

Soprano Titanium’s applicator, for example, has a large spot, meaning that the area of skin treated with light is bigger. This can result in a quicker treatment for larger areas such as the legs. Both Titanium and Platinum use Soprano’s ICE technology so they are more comfortable than IPL or other lasers. You can read more about them here.

What if I want to find out more before committing?

It’s a good idea to take advantage of the free consultation that a professional clinic will offer. Then you can discuss which treatment is best for you in terms of time, cost, effectiveness for your skin and hair type. You should also be able to have a patch test on both types of machine before you make your decision.

At Brigstock Skin and Laser we use Soprano lasers and the Sharplight Formax IPL machine. Clients are able to try both and see which they prefer during their initial consultation.

Most importantly, Brigstock’s technicians constantly hone their skills and techniques to ensure that whichever machine a client chooses, they will achieve exceptional results with maximum comfort.
