As we age it is inevitable that we will be exposed to the sun. This exposure is not necessarily a bad thing and has some proven health benefits like vitamin D production. The healthy glow and tan are still very much desired, although long term sun exposure decreases the production of collagen. This in turn causes damage making it feel wrinkled and coarse and looking red and tired.
By using Intense Pulse Light technology (IPL) it is possible to rejuvenate the skin without the need of injections, fillers or abrasions. Any area of the body can be treated. The technology uses safe visible light and leaves your skin feeling smoother, younger and looking fresher. Age spots, freckles, broken capillaries, rosacea (redness) and sun damage are all reduced, as is uneven pigmentation. Patients often tell us that it becomes easier to apply make up following the treatment.
The IPL machine uses a broad spectrum of light with short wavelengths. This eliminates superficial signs of ageing, including broken capilliaries, freckles, rosacea (redness) and age spots. Pigmented areas absorb the light generated by the IPL machine. This light is in turn converted in to heat which cause the pigmentation to be broken down and broken capilliaries and spider viens to collapse.
Depending on the severity of the sun damage a full-face treatment should take less than 20 minutes. The procedure is painless, although darker skin may experience a sensation similar to that of the warming feeling one has after a day on the beach.
There is no other post-treatment care required other than a sunscreen (minimum SPF30) for a month following treatment.
The treatment is suitable for all skin colours and is suitable for all areas of the body. Your treatment plan will be devised by one of our expert dermatology clinicians.
IPL can be used to treat a wide variety of skin conditions. The following is a list of the most common conditions we treat at Brigstock Skin & Laser Centres:
