How can laser hair removal help me shape my beard and reduce shaving?

For many men, the ritual of daily shaving is just part of their morning routine. But it’s not always as straightforward as running a razor over your face.

No matter how careful you are you may sometimes suffer from ingrowing hairs (particularly on the neck), razor burn and cuts. Ouch!

And for some particularly hirsute men, there’s the dreaded 5 o’clock shadow, and the time consuming need for a second shave.

Even if you have a beard, you’ll probably spend time shaping it and keeping it looking sharp.

Have you ever wondered whether you could revolutionise your daily shave? Not with a new razor but with laser hair removal. After all, women have been using this treatment for decades. So how does that work for male facial hair?

Well in fact, laser hair removal for the beard area is no different than it is for legs!

  • If you’re fond of your beard but just want a permanent neat look , laser hair removal is a perfect way to target the areas you want hair free. Hair growing into the neck area or on your cheeks, or straggly hairs around your beard or moustache can be permanently removed by an experienced technician to give you the look you’re after.
  • However, you may want the whole hairy facial area gone, forever! If you seriously want a smooth, hair free face and the option to never shave again, then this is perfectly possible. It will take a little longer because it is a bigger area to treat.

How many sessions will I need?

Laser hair removal isn’t an instant fix, you will need a series of sessions to achieve good results. General rule of thumb is 6 to 8 sessions. It’s likely to be fewer if you’re just defining your beard, more if you are going for the full hair-free effect.

How much will it cost?

This depends on the clinic, experience of the technicians and the laser machines used. For a series of treatments you’re likely to be offered a discount or tailored package. Brigstock Skin & Laser, for example, offers a ‘Unlimited’ package, meaning you can receive as many sessions of laser hair removal as your practitioner dictates in an 18 month period.

Some clinics may charge a minimum price but add extras on top, whilst others charge a flat rate – so check this before you sign up.

Will I need to take time off work for treatment?

No! Session length will depend on the size of the area being treated: the larger the area, the longer the session. But sessions can be just 15 minutes so you can easily fit it treatment into a lunch break. You can also book sessions after work and at weekends.

How do I prepare?

There are several things you can do to get the best out of your treatment and ensure you have the most comfortable experience. We’ve written a blog with our top ten tips which you can read here.

How will I feel afterwards?

Perfectly normal, we promise. Your skin may appear slightly red immediately after treatment, but this will wear off quickly. You should avoid strenuous exercise and sauna sessions too, to allow your skin time to rest.

Will I need ongoing treatment?

Sometimes you will need a top-up session. Depending on your hair type, this is usually only once a year. Find out more on our top-up blog here.

Are there other methods of hair removal?

Electrolysis is another treatment option that offers permanent hair removal. It’s a very effective way of removing hair and is definitely better for certain hair types, especially white/grey hair with no pigmentation. One to consider if you have that peppered look!

But treatment times are significantly longer so it will cost more. And electrolysis is generally more painful than laser. In fact, the latest laser machines such as the Soprano Titanium are pretty much pain-free so if you have a low pain threshold you’ll definitely prefer laser.

I’m still not sure…..

If you’d like to know more before you sign up, most clinics offer a free consultation to discuss the look you want and options available to you. This is a great way to find out more about a clinic, and for them to find out more about you. You can ask as many questions as you need, without pressure to book sessions. You will also be offered a patch test.

Firstly do your research online. Compare different clinics by checking out their reviews, their result guarantees, charges and expertise. You will get a better result from an experienced laser technician so look for a clinic that scores high on technician experience.

At Brigstock Skin and Laser our experienced technicians constantly strive to make sure their skills and techniques ensure superb results for clients no matter what their hair type or skin colour. Our own reviews will give you guidance when you are deciding which clinic to use.
